Chapter 15

Rogue examined Jessica from head to toe. Excitement bubbled up inside her chest. The woman was everything she’d thought the survivors would be, from her leather boots, khaki pants, vest, and jacket to her gleaming rifle and sunglasses.

Everything about her equipment was new, even the backpack. None of it was old or worn to pieces. The only odd note in her ensemble was the rag tied around her head. Everything else about her spoke of wealth and advancement. This is it. This is what I was looking for!

But Moran wasn’t so easily convinced. “Who are you, and where do you come from?”

“As I said, my name is Jessica. Jessica Gates and I’m from Vancouver,” the woman replied.

“Vancouver?” Moran repeated with a look of astonishment. “As in, Vancouver Canada? You’ve come a long way!”

“That’s right,” Jessica replied, taking a couple of steps closer. “We flew in on a plane, but the engine died, and we crashed.”

“We?” Moran asked.

“There’s two of us. The pilot died in the accident, but my friend Lee and I survived. That’s why I need your help.”

“What kind of help exactly?”

“Lee’s got a broken leg, and I had to leave him behind,” Jessica explained. “He’s holed up inside an old pub a few miles back.”

“So, you want us to rescue him?” Moran prompted.

“Look, I’m pretty desperate. We’re lost out here, and we’ve got nowhere to go,” Jessica said, waving a hand around. “Will you help us or not?”

“How do we know we can trust you? That you won’t turn on us?” Moran asked.

Jessica shrugged. “You don’t know that, but I don’t know if I can trust you either. I’m putting my life in your hands here.”

“Hold on for a few seconds. We need to talk this over,” Moran said.

“Okay, but hurry. There’s no time to waste,” Jessica said, casting a wary look around.

“What do you think?” Moran said as the group huddled around.

“I think we should help her,” Sandi said straight away.

“I don’t know, babes,” Paul said, scratching his head. “How do we know she’s telling the truth?”

“Why else would she be out here?” Bruce protested. “For a leisurely stroll in the countryside?”

“Yeah, but that’s a pretty big gun she’s got there. If she decides to mow us down, there’s nothing we can do about it,” Paul said.

Bear grunted but didn’t add to the conversation.

“What’s there to talk about?” Rogue said with growing frustration. “This is what we came out here for. To rescue any survivors of the plane crash.”

“Yes, but nothing’s changed. We’re still in the same bad shape as before,” Moran pointed out.

“Maybe, but we’ve got the bank now. That’s something we didn’t have before,” Seth said.

“What do you mean?” Moran asked with a frown.

“We can use the bank as a hub of operations. We know it’s safe, right?” Seth asked.

“Right,” Moran said. “What’s your point?”

“Those of us who can’t participate in the rescue operation can wait at the bank,” Seth said. “Like Sandi, for instance. We can spend another night there if we have to before heading back.
